Electronic sound amplification and equalization completely changed how recording works. The invention of the microphone brought about a huge change in the way singers projected their voice - you don't have to sing to the back row in the opera house any more. Performers with whispery voices could make records people would buy to find out what that weirdo was singing about. And electronic audio made a lot of popular recording effects possible, and created the radio (and streaming audio) we have today. (I used to do that for a living.)
