Space Oddity
On a (possibly?) lighter note, I watched this with Lisa Hunter last night and it made me tear up. It made me think about the shuttle launch I watched in Florida with my family, and the episode of Numb3rs I watched with Danaeris Annwfn where Larry Fleinhardt goes into space aboard the shuttle, both of which also made me misty-eyed.
I thought too about the place in politics that music had at the time albums like Minus Ten and Counting were produced, and about whether music has the same capacity to inspire deep introspection and outwardly focused action like it seems to have had in times past when it was a major part of cultural and countercultural movements. I feel so moved by this piece of music being played in this setting. It brings a myriad of other thoughts and concepts into my head, and it makes me wonder what kind of media in current popular culture is creating the grounds for the kind of emotional response that I have to this kind of thing.
