Pigtails!

I was going to write something longer about the people and things in my life that have helped put me in a position of greater confidence and self-acceptance. I'll probably do that eventually.

For the moment, I want to note that I wore my hair in pigtails to the dog shelter yesterday. The world did not end, I got a smile or two, and I felt cute and brave.

The more common it is for men to wear long hair, the more it becomes acceptable for them to do things to keep that long hair under control. Since the "Sixties" cultural upheavals broke the requirement for men to wear extremely short hair, men have found that they occasionally needed to wear a ponytail, either for practical reasons, or to make it less offensive to conservative relatives or employers. (My grown son, who is a clinical psychologist, wears his hair slightly above mid-back length - only a little shorter than mine! - and puts it in a ponytail when he needs it out of the way, e.g., when driving his car with the top down.) Braids, either single or double, are also somewhat acceptable, so it doesn't surprise me that men are also experimenting with pigtails (two ponytails that cover the ears). It might not be acceptable on a schoolteacher or a bank teller, but I'm sure the animals at the shelter have no opinion :-)

(Personally, as you know, I'm very much in favor of gender-bending self-expression!)
