Thoughts Before Bed

A post on Facebook brought one of my favorite expressions from Kurt Vonnegut to mind. (Not that I'm deeply familiar with Vonnegut, I should note.) It's from a hypothetical baptismal speech for twin babies in God Bless You Mr. Rosewater.

“Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”

God damn it, you've got to be kind.

Priorities

I prioritized my perception of my health and mental state today by deciding to take a short ride after class instead of going home and working. I think a given amount of work tends to expand to fit available time for me, so I decided I'd just make the time I have this evening enough time to get my response paper done for tomorrow.

That decision feels good. I plan to continue prioritizing a little time for self-care that way, even if I still don't know where I'd find time to meet friends and be social. If I have to give up everything else in my life to be successful at school, I don't think it's a reasonable path. Hopefully I'll find out that I can do more than just work and still pass classes. But I also need to concentrate better on work when I *do* get to it, so I'm going to close this stuff down and write now!

Hendricks Chapel Birthday Party!

I'm done! I'm done with that response paper! Or done enough. Done enough. I'm going to do some more reading. Maybe after I play one *little* game....

It's kind of freeing to have decided to actively try to be less thorough at this stuff. There's a little adrenaline flow as though I know I'm doing something naughty.

But I'd like to get through this with my sanity.

There was a birthday party for the Hendricks Chapel's 85th birthday today. Punch and cake on the plaza at the bottom of the steps! Hendricks Chapel is a non-denominational religious/spiritual space with what I'm told is a fantastic coffee shop in the basement (I wouldn't know).

I'm on such a pretty campus!
