Daft Punk Cover on Theremin

Someone posting a Daft Punk song reminded me of this wonderful theremin cover of Something About Us. This is one of the videos that inspired me to buy my own theremin, some years back. I've had trouble playing it in my room at my parents' house; I think there's too much EMF interference. Maybe I'll do some more practice with it in Syracuse.

Tomorrowland

Huge thanks to [livejournal.com profile] posicat, who took me out to see Tomorrowland as a graduation present. I enjoyed the movie tremendously. Even if I hadn't enjoyed the rest of the movie, it would have been worth it for the retro-futurist aesthetic and the scenes at the recreated '64 world's fair. Those were fantastic.

But the rest of the movie was pretty great too. I left wanting to be a part of making the world a better place.

It was really nice to be out and social with he and my girlfriend Danae, too. Seeing people in person is a very good thing.

World's Fair Remains

Seeing Tomorrowland, I can't help but think of my own visit to the world's fair site in Flushing Meadows. The remaining structures - the Unisphere, the Observatory Towers, and the New York City Pavillion - are wonderful examples of mid-century modern design. In their current time-worn state, the pavilion and towers have a message of wonder and optimism, tarnished by the events of the intervening years and our entry into a world that was impossible to imagine fifty years ago.

Here's one of my favorite photographs of the site. There are more at my Flickr page in my New York City album.
