Actually, I think they just spray barely-not-liquid nitrogen into the furniture, both into the stuffing and into crevices and such. It's just nitrogen, so as long as the room isn't tightly sealed, it's harmless. And it's chemically inert, so it doesn't damage the furniture in any way. It just freezes the damn bugs to death.
