Danae asked me last night whether I'd seen the blow-up over Nathan Pyle (creator of Strange Planet) and his statement about March for Life. I did, but have paid it little mind. Nearly every such controversy I can think of starts with an initial explosion as people react simplistically to a single piece of basically decontextualized information. I'll wait and see if more context comes out and decide how I feel about everything then.
Appreciating creative products of people with beliefs I see as fundamentally misguided and hurtful is complicated. People are imperfect and I suspect I would find fundamental disagreements on issues of individual and social rights with just about anyone. I don't think there's a single way to reconcile that. Viewing creative works in a vacuum on their own merits isn't always the right choice. Nor is seeing them purely as expressions of hurtful beliefs held by the creator. I have no answer to this, and this is why I sometimes seem to ignore these controversies. (Not that anyone likely cares what I think about these things...)
