He had it modded by someone who does that (as well as other camera stuff, I think?) professionally. It involves removing the IR filter from in front of the CCD image capture chip and changing the way the camera focuses to account for the different focal point of IR light.
I haven't shot enough black and white to know what the difference is. He says there is one and he's a pro, so I figure there must be. *grins*
