Illegal Rental Advertisements
Jul. 8th, 2022 03:08 pmIn looking for rental properties, Danae found several listings that violate the Saskatchewan Human Rights Code by prohibiting children. In an homage to
armiphlage's work along these lines, I sent the below message to the offending company.
ETA: I got a response not too long after. The text in full is:
"Thank you for this information."
That's something at least.

Hello!
I noticed that advertisements for several of your rental properties in
Regina state "ADULT ONLY/NO PETS ALLOWED." As examples, see your ads for 237 College Avenue East, 24-1140 McIntosh Street, and others. An example image from one of your ads is attached.
Are you aware that prohibiting rental to tenants with children is a
violation of the Saskatchewan human rights code unless the whole
building is restricted to adults of over 55 years of age?
You can read about this here:
https://saskatchewanhumanrights.ca/education-resources/information-sheets/landlords-tenants-and-housing-discrimination/
Of particular note is this text from the above link: "For example, a
rental advertisement cannot state “no immigrants”, “no Aboriginal
people.” It also cannot say “no children” or “adults only”, or that
the landlord will only rent to people who are working, as this would
eliminate the possibility of renting to many people on public
assistance."
Thank you for your attention!
