stormdog: (Geek)
While my team lead was out for training through the early part of the week, I took the opportunity to play some selections from my MP3-format collection of music from various games in the Final Fantasy series. Though it can be good music to work to at first, it also leaves me feeling more than a little nostalgic. In fact, after playing through the pieces I have from my edition with music by the Milan Symphony orchestra, I literally ached to play through Final Fantasy six (or three as it was known in the states) again. But I've already been through that game three or four times. I might take up the struggle against the empire again at some point, but the newness and freshness of everything isn't quite there anymore.

But there must still be some good, great, even fantastic games out there that I haven't played yet. Despite this recent rush to 1st-person-view, massively multi-player games that's occurred in recent years, there must be someone out there still producing detailed, engrossing, single-player role-playing games on a console, or even on the PC. Right?

And beyond that, I'm sure there are some gems from the past that I've missed that are just waiting to be unearthed. Tales of Phantasia is a good example. Never released in the states, a team of coders and translators, entirely volunteer fans, ripped the game off of the original cartridge and recoded it entirely into English for we poor gaijin to enjoy on our emulators.

So what I'm asking for is recommendations for games. You can probably get a good overview of my tastes from the above. I like the feel of older RPGs. I prefer top-down over first person view and, to a much lesser extent, tile-based over free form movement, though that's very much negotiable.

I want games that involve building your characters up from nothing. Games that involve finding better and better weapons and items, learning skills, and a real plot. I like complex game mechanics, and varied ones. Yes, the game mechanics were totally redesigned from Final Fantasy four to five to six to seven, but each time it was different, novel, and fun to learn! (We won't talk about eight or nine...)

Offer me your suggestions. I don't care what platform they're on. I'll try anything from Atari, Commodore, and Amiga up through the Xbox and Playstation 2, though of my favorite games a large percentage are on the Super Nintendo (Final Fantasy, Tales of Phantasia, maybe even Soulblazer), the Commodore 64/128 (The Ultima series; need I say more?), and even old DOS games (Betrayal at Krondor anyone?).

Comment back with anything you think I might like along those lines. Or even with things that you like, even if I might not. That would be interesting too, just to see what kind of tastes my readers have in games. The best part, though not necessary, would be for you to even tell me what it is that you like about them.

I'm just aching to get lost in a good computer RPG again and I'm starting to worry that there may not be any more out there.

Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?
