Andrea and I went out today to look at a 1971 Super Beetle that we're thinking about buying to replace our ailing Escort. Oh wow; it was so different than anything else I've ever sat behind the wheel of. We didn't actually take it for a drive, but I didn't have to to see that it has has no power brakes, no power steering, unadjustable seat and non-tilt steering wheel, and the entire instrument panel on what passed for a dashboard consisted of a fuel gauge and a speedometer. I sat down in the driver's seat and felt like I was sitting in a bumper car at an amusement park; it was like I was driving this cute kiddie version of a real car. The body is a little dinged and worn and the original red is showing through the add-on white in a couple places. It has a rag top and floor boards that, we were told, let in a little bit of water if you splash through a big puddle, and I imagine that it's cold as hades in the winter.
I think I'm in love.
We're going to look into getting a test drive in and having it checked out by our mechanic. If it's mechanicaly sound, or has only minor issues that I can probably fix myself (and on a 1971 car there's ain't a lot that I can't fix myself, which is a huge bonus for me), we're really thinking about buying it. I have wanted a Beetle for as long as I can remember, ever since I was a little kid. I'm just enraptured by this vehicle! I was babbling about it to
serinthia just about the whole way home from work. *giggles* Geeks and their impractical transportation....
