I haven't written in a while; life keeps happening too quickly.
I've been playing Set at lunch with Serinthia. I've loved the game ever since I was introduced to it at
anarchist_nomad's place some months ago. So far we've been pretty evenly matched; we keep ending up in twelve to twelve ties, or with a difference of just one each way. Not only that, but counting all our games that haven't ended in a tie, we're still in a tie. *giggles* It is possible to have too much of a good thing though. I'm going to try to dig up my chess set for tomorrow. Not sure how successful I'll be with the amount of stuff in our basement, but I'll give it a shot. It's literally been years since I've played chess and I'm elated to have somebody willing to play. It seems we're both fancy chess set aficionados too, so my Harry Potter Wizard Chess set that I couldn't resist picking up at Big Lots out in Michigan will be appreciated!
I realized that I've forgotten to mention the chest freezer that my mate and I acquired a week or two ago. I'd wanted one for a while in the hope that we could save some money on food by buying things in bulk and/or from places like CostCo and stocking up. We hadn't had money to spare on things like that though. Actually we still don't, so when I saw one sitting on the curb with a "Free - works great" sign, I wasn't going to pass up that bit of serendipity. I loaded it up into the truck, hauled it into the garage, and hooked it up. After a day for the coolant to settle down from it's move, I plugged it in. Indeed, it works just fine. Not only was it in pretty good shape, but it looked like it had been thoroughly cleaned; no stinkyness to speak of, and no mysterious water or sludge at the bottom. This makes me happy.
I put a little more time into my Proliant, now dubbed Thunderdog, on getting my backups going, but no luck. Spent a little more time on Puppy, my emulations system that lives next to the television. At least, when it's not on my workbench where it's been for a few months. I think my video card was flaky, and I have some issues with the hard drives I've been using. I'll run some diagnostics on them tonight.
First though, Moira and I are going out to Noodles and Company for dinner. She has a birthday coupon for a free dish, and I'm more than happy to take an excuse to get some of that delicious pesto. Yum!
I've found a wash machine to replace the one in the basement that isn't working. It's in Plainfield, just northwest of Joliet. It's going to be a bit of a drive, but Andrea's going to meet up with me after work to make the drive together. Road trip! We haven't been on the road nearly as much as we'd like lately, and while that will probably get better now that she's working and we have a little bit of extra money, this will still be fun. I've wanted to see some of mid-Illinois for some time: there have been some fantastic Lovecraftian pictures of abandoned farmhouses and barns in
rural_ruin, and I want to see some of the area with my own eyes. Not that we'll really be getting into the heartlands, but it will be a fun taste and a good excuse for a drve.
Even figuring in the cost of gas, the $35 wash machine should come out to less than the part for mine. Plus, I thought maybe I'd put mine up on Craig's list. Put a tag of $20 on the thing, put a link right in the copy to the part it needs, and see if I can get someone to take it off my hands.
Very good things happened over the weekend. Saturday was the official birthday celebration for
wooisme, attended by
polymorphism,
tincrash, and Tin's roommate, Tony. The group of us met up at an indoor psychedelic black-lit mini-golf place called
The Putting Edge for a round of golf and some ski-ball silliness. Working together, the group of us got enough tickets for the birthday girl to get a blacklight-reactive slinky and a bottle of bubble-blowing stuff. Yay us! Somewhere around the twelfth hole the loud music got to be a bit too much for me and I let Danni take over my game.
Afterward, we went to the
really good Chinese buffet for a natal-day feast. Having had nothing to eat that day but a smallish sandwich from one of those little Panera-like bakeries, the quantity of deep-friend goodness available to me was very much appreciated. Mmmmm. Finally, much fuller than we arrived, we were chased out of the restaurant by the staff, who locked the door behind us before we had even gotten to the parking lot proper. I guess we overstayed our welcome just a little bit.
But despite the lateness of the hour the group of hung out in the lot for quite some time simply for lack of a better place to go. Tin and Tony had to leave not too long after dinner, but the remaining three of us talked and chatted for what my memory tells me is over an hour until I finally ended up sprawled across the hood of the truck when my ankles complained too much. Fun times! I am so looking forward to getting together with Danni again for faire next weekend.
I was going to write more in this post, but immediately after getting home from dinner, I crashed on the couch until about ten o' clock, at which point I went to bed and crashed until ten after six. I finished this entry up during lunch over a coule of games of Set. Didn't get as much done as I would have liked last night; I was hoping to make more progress on Puppy and dig up my chess set. But, I feel much better now that I'm actually caught up on sleep! More forthcoming when I get to it....
