stormdog: (Tawas dog)
I had a pretty productive vacation; particularly the last day of it. Yesterday, I moved furniture all around and steam cleaned the carpets. I got most of the dirt and grime out of the problem areas and, more importantly, I think the smell there is a lot better too. I suspect that Lazslo was having trouble getting upstairs to the litterbox. I did the first step and the landing with the little hand tool attachment and those are a lot better too. I went through five or six refills of a three gallon wide track Rug Doctor and one large bottle and half a small bottle of rug cleaner liquid.

I found that the curtain that hangs down on the stair window and the rug under the dining room table are both more than a little funky. The rug is out in the garage while I try to figure out how to clean it. The curtain has been washed once and will be again when I get home. Maybe Febreze will help too.

Since I was on a roll, and they were dripped on already from my trips up and down the basement stairs with buckets of water from the deep sink, I got down on my knees with a bucket, a sponge, and some Pine-sol to scrub the back stairs and landing. While I was down there, I washed the walls, hammered a piece of trim that was coming off back on, and tightened the screws holding the hand rail to the wall.

Between doing all of that, I washed a bunch of laundry, drove to the court to pay an overdue traffic citation, then drove to the DMV to pay the fee to have my license reinstated (I found, after checking my mail, that I've been driving on a suspended license since April. Oops.). How odd; the DMV isn't there anymore! I drove back home to find out where the DMV is now (a location that makes very little sense to me in that there's no way to get there from Kenosha proper without a car or a very long walk) and then got out there to take care of that. I have a new driver's license picture, which isn't quite as horrific as the old one, though if I'd known they were going to retake it I would have brushed my hair thoroughly out in the car. It's ok; was way too humid after the thunderstorms for decent looking hair anyway.

Oh, thunderstorms! Yes, that was neat. Having installed my scanner and CB radio in the truck, I was able to drive it down to the lakefront in the midst of the worst of the storm and listen to NOAA weather radio while watching the wind whip the lake into a froth and seeing water sheeting over the parking lot so thickly as to make it impossible to see more than twenty yards out the window. I turned sideways to the lake and the rush of wind was enough to rock me substantially side to side. After fifteen minutes or so, I realized that I'd forgotten to close the windows at the house and rushed back to take care of it. I had to go slowly just due to lack of visibility. A large utility truck was sitting to the side of the road with it's blinkers on; I assume they decided to wait it out.

Fortunately, very little water had gotten in the house. Our pool had some debris in it though, including a small branch. In all, I found that there were branches down all over the streets. Two significantly sized trees had fallen into seventy-fifth street and blocked traffic. Power was out at several intersections, and the junction of seventy-fifth and Sheridan was flooded over the curbs. We so rarely get a good storm like that that I was almost bouncing in my seat as I drove through it.
