The truck behaved pretty well today. I wasn't sure if it would considering that, yesterday, it was continually getting stuck in first gear and/or neutral. I've learned that I can sometimes trick it into popping out of low gear if I downshift to number 2, then up to drive again. But the (mostly) highway driving today was much better on it. The problems yesterday were probably from the stop-and-go driving in Zion, where [livejournal.com profile] posicat and I were to pick up a cymbal I was buying from someone on Craig's List. I had to slowly limp the truck along to a spot in front of his house, revving the engine to stay ahead of people piling up behind me while I toodled along at twenty miles an hour with suspicious hints of burning wafting from under the hood, but I figured that if I'd made it all the way to Zion, I was going to track down the address and buy my cymbal, damn it!

The cymbal sounds like someone is hitting a radiator with a mallet, but hey, at least my kit has one now. I guess you get what you pay for. I have gained a basis for comparison if I want to try a couple out at music center. I mounted it on the high hat stand 'cause I have neither a normal cymbal stand nor high hat cymbals, and it works well enough.

So Posi and I waited at the Jewel in Zion for [livejournal.com profile] tybis to pick him up and head off to [livejournal.com profile] samiitiger's birthday dinner. (Sorry I missed it Samii! I was a little worried about actually getting home though....) The drive home, down Sheridan road, went smoothly, so I'm feeling better about transportation prospects. I just have to keep out of areas with lots of stop signs and traffic lights I guess.

But that really wasn't what I was going to write about.

The aforementioned cymbal purchase plus truck problems prevented me from getting home in time to do the Ebay posting I intended to. Thursday, when I was going to do it instead, will probably involve Posi taking me out to McHenry Auto Sales to look at vehicles (though maybe I can save the trip if I just call and see what he has and ask him to keep an eye out for something fitting my criteria), so I may have to go home a little early from dinner with my family tonight and work on it then. I will probably be a little late getting home too since I have to stop and get the laptop I left at Posi's place last night. Time keeps getting away from me.

Ebay is on my mind both because I need to get stuff out of my house and organize things, but because of the interesting things happening at work. In a meeting today, my VP of IT said that he has no idea whether layoffs will be coming along with merger type stuff. However, both organizations are extremely lean as far as IT staff, so perhaps not. Our support ratio, here at least, is already around 200 to one.

So my company, $FOO, is going to be called $FOO-$BAR now that we're merging with $BAR. Of course, that's assuming that the deal goes through. I've heard that at least one of our major shareholders is not happy about the idea. I've also heard that we have people working at one of our offices who used to work for the company that we're doing this mash-up with who have been warning executive management about how bad an idea this is. That's encouraging. On the other hand, there's also a chance that, if we don't merge with somebody, that we might get bought out by somebody who wants our product line but doesn't really care about keeping our offices open. So who knows. As I said before, I'm not going to worry. It's of some level of academic interest to me, up to the point where it all gets over my head 'cause I just don't care that much. If I get booted at some point in the future, at least I should get some severance pay. I think.

While talking to my friend out in Washington state (though we closed our office there he continues to work remotely) I said that we have gotten big enough and disorganized enough that I really don't know what me make anymore. He told me that there's an entire line of software one of our divisions makes that he only found out about last week. Now, his position is in implementations, which means he is going onsite at client locations to provide information and assist with setup and install of our software, and he doesn't even know what software we make. We're a well oiled machine around here.
