Circuits programmed on a microchip via an approximation of natural evolution that result in a device that performs the function that was being sought, but in a way that would be nearly impossible to design through any other means. Absolutely fascinating stuff. It's funny; the talk about how the end result had five logic-gates that were connected to each other, but not to any other part of the circuit, yet still caused the chip to fail if any of them were disabled brings the brain modification that Zaphod Beeblebrox performed on himself sharply to mind. Because I am that big a dork.
