I just want to boost signal about some poorly thought-out choices made by Deviant Art in regard to their requirement for individuals registering with them to declare themselves as either 'male' or 'female' on their profile. Reading the responses from the help desk, I think that people are just following the book with a standard response and closure of the ticket; I think this is more an error of thoughtlessness than malice, at least on the part of the customer service people responding directly. Having worked in service desk for seven years, I understand the appeal of an easy close. But I also want to spread the word and hopefully bring the issue to people's attention, especially those people involved with the running of DA.

A tweet from Cat Valente brought this to my attention. I don't use DA myself, but I know that I know people who do.

I got a failed delivery notice for a piece of registered mail earlier this week. Today, I used my lunch break to drive out to the post office and see what it was. I was vaguely worried that it would be something negative I'd have to deal with. Instead, it was the package I'd been waiting for from Ukraine.
