Bits and pieces
Apr. 20th, 2011 08:03 pmIt's good to be home again for a while. When was I here last? Friday I think? No, Saturday morning. The cat here missed me a lot. She was contentedly sitting on my lap, drooling on my leg and purring as I stroked her head. She's a little annoying sometimes but I'm going to miss her once I move.
-----------
I've had bad dreams before, but I dom't remember *ever* having woken up in tears of sadness and anger before. I'm so glad I woke up next to someone wonderful to hug. That makes such a difference.
-----------
I just finished Neruomancer. It was pretty decent. I was pretty surprised at how very directly things like Shadowrun borrowed from it. (In the SNES console game version of Shadowrun, the villian is even named Armitage!) But I was kind of floored when I looked it up in Wikipedia. I didn't realize it was published quite that early on. Gibson really *did* define the genre.
And it was amazing how few anachronicities were there. Things like data storage on tape. I guess part of that is because a lot of the ideas of cybertechnology presented in this book eventually, to greater or lesser degrees, became reality. Or at least part of the sort of public conception of what comprises 'cyberspace' (a term that Gibson coined). It's hard for your work to seem terribly out of date when it helped to create the future.
----------
I'm very glad that I'm going to have my Wednesdays free starting next week. I want more time to myself in the city now that the weather is warming up. I'm going to take my bike to get all fixed up tomorrow. I'll get myself a helmet and some lights too. I love the thought that I can bike all the way into downtown, for instance, and then take the CTA back home if I'm tired.
----------
I ate *so* much sushi today at the Chinese buffet in St. Charles that has fresh sushi included in the price. It may well be my only meal today 'cause I'm just not hungry yet. That said, I need to make some chili soon, as well as gnocchi and tortellini. Does anybody want to come over for dinner tomorrow?
