stormdog: (Geek)
I've had events on my calendar for a few years to request my free credit reports from the various reporting agencies here in the US that track such things. I would request a report from one of the three agencies every four months and keep up with them by rotating through them. Except I haven't followed up by actually doing it for quite some time.

Today is my Transunion day, so to go along with the better track of money I've been keeping lately, I went ahead and ordered the report. It was mostly what I expected, however frustrating. Like the charge-off for my auto loan that ended because my car was rear-ended and totaled out. But on the unexpected side were two accounts with Wisconsin Electric for an address in Milwaukee that I've never heard of and whose account holder isn't so great with paying bills.

I have disputed them with the agency and will see how that goes. If that doesn't work, I may have to break out the certified mail. Bleh. In any case, I'm not too worried right now; it's not like I'm going to be applying for a mortgage or something any time soon.

My first two days of school were good. This is going to be a more intense year than the last one for sure. My history class will be fantastic; we're learning to work with archives. In fact, we're meeting in the archives in our first class session next week. I honestly feel like one of the cool people, to be allowed to be in a place that holds such an array of treasures. We have four papers to write. One uses archival sources, one uses newpaper and microfilm, one uses scholarly journals, and one combines all of the above into a large paper. Word counts are 2000 for the first three, and 3000 for the fourth, and the professor says we'll have hard time figuring out how to fit things into that little room. I hope he's right. The archival paper is going to be about one particular year in the life of Kenosha between 1900 and 1950. I'm interested in the Populist movement and the way it fell apart, so I'm going to choose the year that William Jennings Bryan gave the Cross of Gold speech.

The final project in my anthropology class is to create my own, internally consistent and realistic culture. We turn in five pages on our culture, and then we get feedback and comments back. Then the professor gives us a technology that's been introduced to our culture and we write four pages about how our culture change because of it. As [livejournal.com profile] lisagems said, it's just like sci-fi world building!

My interviewing class involves interviewing children. I didn't realize that until the first day of class, but I think it will be alright. We need to, working in a couple large groups, come up with topics, questions, a research proposal to submit to the campus board on human subject research for approval, and do the interviewing and data collection. At the end, we will write our own individual papers about the project. That's probably going to be a lot of work too, but I'm excited to have someone sitting next to me who I've already talked about collaborating with and who seem excited and enthusiastic about the class. I already wrote about the concurrent enrollment issue that came up, but hopefully that'll be alright.

So this year is going to be busy. I'm intimidated, but excited. I hope it all goes well, and am planning to spend a lot of time doing reading, writing, and research.
