stormdog: (Tawas dog)
I forgot to bring my math text with me to school; I'll have to put together my formulas to bring to the stats test tomorrow morning once I get home from here. Hopefully I'll be in bed before 12:30. I don't think it'll take too long, and I get home about 11:00.

I stopped in my advisor's office to get my registration flag lifted for Spring registration. She's leaving for the AAA (American Anthropological Association) national conference this weekend, where she's giving a paper. I wish I could be there; I had a neat time at the one in New Orleans, and I think I'd get quite a lot more out of it now.

Anyway, she and I had a brief chat about history's connection to anthropology and about what she feels like is a trend for historians to take a more anthropological approach. It reminded me of the wonderful book I read last year about women in turn-of-the-century consumer culture. It talked about how traditional views of women as being mindless consumers were missing a great deal of depth, and that they were really using consumer cultures to define their own identities as politically involved, independent people. I loved it, and it made a major impression on me. That's the kind of history I'm excited about. I suppose that's why I'm writing the kind of paper I am.

That said, I'm concerned that it might be a bit hard to find primary source material for this paper. I'm thinking I may need to take a drive to Milwaukee or Madison to look at back issues of Box Office and Moving Picture World. Happily, I happened to bump into one of the two guys I've met here who are in the library frequently working on a book about the Kenosha Theatre. He tells me that Box Office has a lot of their old back issues online to virtually page through. He also says he was able to order some hard copies of magazines via interlibrary loan; you can only get one box at a time, so it might be slow going, but I'll see whether it'll do. If not, there may be a road trip this weekend!

Which means that I really need to work hard on this paper and see if I can get most of a draft done by Friday so I know where I'd most like to add some primary source material. Though what I'll probably actually end up doing is paging through the magazines to look for things that jump out at me as illustrative of modes of consumption for movie audiences and go 'Ooh, I should include that!' Wish me luck?

Tonight, I finally got caught up on entering my financial transactions into Quicken again. I was about a month behind. Fortunately, I don't buy a whole lot of stuff, so it didn't take super long. I am still considering a tablet though. I should decide soon what classes I want to take so I can start figuring out how many of my textbooks will be available in electronic format so I can see how useful such a device will be to me.
