stormdog: (Tawas dog)
I've been posting tons of photos over on Facebook and Google Plus, but I haven't done a lot of writing about life in general.

Things are going pretty well. I just got back to Kenosha from a lovely weekend with [livejournal.com profile] danaeris after a great Thursday and Friday with [livejournal.com profile] lisagems. It seems my usual schedule of driving down to see Lisa on Thursday and spending the weekend with Danae is going to be upset by my work schedule. Starting next week, I'll be working at the archives on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. I still haven't figured out what my travel schedule will be in light of that, so I guess I have to do that soon.

I want to try to be more disciplined about doing productive things during my break. As school draws closer and I think about the things I'll be learning and the fact that I will have much less leisure time, I realize that I really ought to be using the time I have now. Sure I've been doing tons of photo editing, but I also want to keep working on learning Spanish and getting some reading done. I was getting burned out on 50 pictures a day, so I'm lowering my quote to 25, and I will supplement that with an hour of Spanish practice via Rosetta Stone, and some reading.

A couple school related books have shown up, and I'm excited about looking through those. Mark Rosenfelder's Language Construction Kit is pretty great. I spent one night lying in bed while reading the chapter on sounds and phonetic notation and making all sorts of strange sounds as I try to reproduce what's being described on the pages. I need to find a website that has a full inventory of lingual sounds that I can listen to while I read. I'm sure there must be one out there. I'm also playing with ideas about what I want to include or not include in my constructed language, which will be my final project for my linguistic anthropology class.

The other book that's shown up so far is Thomas Hine's Populuxe. It's funny how so many of my interests seem to converge at the right time and place. Whether it's across multiple classes in a single semester, or between outside interests and course material. I think that probably means that means that I'm making good choices about classes. In this case, as my personal interest in architecture and especially movie theatres has progressed from '20s palaces to the array of Deco and Moderne and beyond designs from the '30s and into mid-century designs, I find myself becoming more interested in the culture of mid-century America. The final paper I wrote in my history class last semester covered movie houses and cinema in the context of consumer and consumptive culture, and how that culture transformed through the first half of the 20th century with cinema as a catalyst. Now, as I find myself interested in following American culture past that point and into more recent times, I'm taking a class that will do exactly that! School is awesome.

I wish I had more time and opportunity to practice Japanese, but I need to get Spanish down solidly first. But I will get back to Japanese, sooner or later.

In personal news, it turns out my dad broke or fractured some ribs in his fall, so he's still in some pretty significant pain. I wish there was more I could do for him, but there really isn't I guess. He's still going in to school and teaching. As he told me, he'll be in pain whether he's at home or at school, so he may as well be at school. I am a little worried about him, but I also expect he'll be ok and it will just take time. I hope he doesn't push himself too hard.

This weekend was really fun. With Lisa, we hit a number of thrift stores. I was looking for shoes and clothing. I didn't end up buying anything, though I almost bought a pair of vinyl boots. They were brand new, in my size, super-shiny black, and only $18. But I decided to pass. I'm not sure they'd hold up to a lot of wear, and I'm not looking for something that' strictly a costume piece. I want to be able to wear them around.

She and I also got to Freegeek Chicago, where I donated two desktop PCs that I judged new enough not to go to Goodwill to be recycled. I also gave them an old KVM switch, and a book from 1988 on uprading and repairing PCs. It covered things like IBM XT and ATs. I was hoping it would get a laugh, but I think the person who took my stuff didn't know what it was. That's ok; maybe somebody will see it later and get a chuckle. At least it's out of my house.

I also remembered to pick up the lovely bracelet I commissioned from her. It's a woven wirework bracelet in pride colors. I didn't own anything in pride colors, and I'd seen a few of her bracelets and really loved them. She makes them in a variety of colors, including ones with fan appeal like Hogwarts houses or My Little Pony colors. You can see her work, including a bracelet of the type I now have, over here!

Danae and I had a lot of fun too. I went with she and a friend of hers to a party hosted by one of her professors. I met a few new people and had some interesting conversations about art and photography and Detroit. There was a lot of tasty food too. *grins* The atmosphere was one that I'm not terribly used to being in; kind of professional, kind of classy I guess for lack of a better term. I seemed to fit in pretty well and was pleased with myself. I eve handed out a few of my business cards with my photography information. I really ought to put making a proper website for myself together a goal for the near future. Flickr is nice and all, but I'd like a place to present some of my best stuff all together in a more professional way.

On Sunday she and I walked down to Bennison's bakery, just a few blocks away. She got some of their fresh bread and I bought a small chunk of yogurt pound cake, which was awesome. I think we may need to go back there from time to time for a treat or two. She and I also watched another couple episodes of Sherlock. I still don't feel like I liked the resolution of the stand off at the end of episode 3, and I found episode 5 kind of disappointing in general. But I loved the rest of the series, and I'm willing to give number 6 a shot.

Danae and I talked again about inviting some people over to her place for a game night, as her condo is getting every closer to a state of conducivity for such activities (Oh stop it LJ; conducivity is so a word!). Maybe friends of hers from school and friends of mine from elsewhere in Chicago. Now that we've both met all these folks, maybe I should even call them all friends of ours, which is a nice thing to think.

And with that, I'm going to go play a board game with my brother. 'Till next time!

My girlfriend [livejournal.com profile] danaeris just sent me a link to an architectural salvage shop in Chicago because it made her think of me. That's love. *grins*
