stormdog: (Tawas dog)
I got home today to find that Juan had been by to examine my car. Yay! Since the hood was up, after I got some post-bike-ride food, I decided to go out and take a look. This led to a few photos of the separated ball joint.

For those unfamiliar, the the circular part on the arm that comes in from the right hand side of the frame is supposed to be connected to the circular part that is to its left. That joint is the primary means of support for the wheel, connecting it to the frame. Further up, there's a second connectin to a piece called a tie rod, which is attached the steering system and makes the wheel turn left or right on the ball joint. The ball joint also provides the ability to move in other planes too, to allow the wheel to jostle around due to road bumps, or be aligned to point and lean the right way.

I'm not a mechanic, and I really don't like working on cars, but I have picked up a little knowledge about just what some of those parts are. Though I still subscribe to advice I heard from Click and Clack, the Car Talk guys, who once told a caller that it's always a mistake to look around down there; you're never going to see anything good.

Anyway, I just talked to Juan on the phone; he picked up parts, but is tired and will work on the car on Friday. I'll be out of town with Posi, so it's super-nice of him to come fix my car anyway. Juan is awesome.

Work at the archives was fun. We had a large group of people come in to research a church in Somers. At one point, the congregation met near the parcel I'm researching, so I was able to show them a few things I'd come upon in my work. Then, having finished with the plat books I've been digitizing at the end of the day, I started working on covering some of the old tax roll ledgers in mylar. I'm very bad at this, but I think I'm slowly figuring it out. After we officially closed at 3, I spent another hour looking through the town records of Somers and not finding much that relates to my subject. I see a lot of notes like "so-and-so presented his report and it was filed," but of course none of those reports are there. I was hoping to find some information about the land purchase for Petrifying Springs park. (I did find one petition from April of 1927, signed by a bunch of nearby landowners asking the township to "do all in your power to prevent the erection and operation of soft drink parlors, road houses, and dance halls" near the proposed county park. Oh, those soft drink parlors are real dens of vice!)

As for the rest of today, I'm going to catch up with people's comments on Facebook and Livejournal, then get to writing up an outline for this report. I'm hoping to have a draft done soon, and I'd like to make a lot of progress before this weekend's road trip. I may end up doing some work on it in the evenings anyway.
