A classmate told me about an article in the New York Times yesterday about Chiapas and the Zapatistas and some kind of disorder or unrest happening. Though our campus has the New York Times in paper format for free, I can't seem to find it online. Maybe I'll have a chance to look for it before I leave.

Have any of you seen anything?

In the meantime, I found this write-up by the BBC from January of this year that I thought you might be interested in. It briefly covers the original militant resistance and rebellion in 1994, the economic and social marginalization of the indigenous people of Chiapas, and what Las Zapatistas are doing now. It's a very basic overview of the place and community I'll be in for seven or eight days of my trip. (By community, I mean the Zapatistas. I won't actually be in the specific villages mentioned in this article.)

And here's another one from the Associated Press via New York Daily News. http://www.nydailynews.com/news/world/mexico-zapatista-rebel-movement-marks-20-years-article-1.1563432

I'm done with all my classes today and am working my shift in the archives. My stuff is all packed up and in my car, which my brother J will meet me with after school. He and my brother T are meeting my parents for dinner before I drive south. I'll pick up Lisa at work, and we'll both go visit Danae. I'm spending the night at Lisa's place in Uptown, and she's driving me to O'Hare in the morning. I've been so excited and distractable today!

Thank you all for your interest in and support of my trip! I'll have *so much* to share with you when I get back!

Another article by a journalist who visited Las Zapatistas, this one from Mother Jones this January.

It looks like my tablet is totally out of power. Lisa was kind enough to lend me her laptop for a few minutes for email and things.

This will be my last update 'till I'm back in the states. I'll be thinking of you while I'm gone and will return with tons of stories and pictures to share! May you all be well until I'm back.
