Quite a Day
Oct. 13th, 2014 04:27 pmToday has been a day.
I woke up at 7 and was exhausted form a combination of being up studying for the exam I'd forgotten was today and being anxious all weekend. I emailed the archives and went back to bed for an hour or so. As I got ready to leave for work, I somehow forgot that I need an hour end-to-end time and got on the bike with half an hour to make the trip.
I decided to take a faster, more direct, but rougher, route. Two miles in, there was a street sweeper parked in the right lane. I raised a hand to signal my left pass, moved over, and crashed at, according to my GPS log, about 18 miles per hour. I think I must have hit a big crack between the lanes. I'd made sure the oncoming cars in the left land were more than far enough back to pass the sweeper, but not knowing how much *more* time than that I had, I got my behind out of the street in an expedient fashion.
The sweeper driver was awesome, getting out of his truck to make sure I was ok and offering to call somebody. Later, I wrote the department of public works an email telling them how much I appreciated his concern. I felt ok and, after straightening my handlebars and adjusting a jammed brake, rode the rest of the way to school.
I scraped up my knee, but didn't realize until I got to school that I had a sharp red line across the bottom of my ribs. Must have hit the handlebars. Once settled in, I became concerned that I couldn't feel the bottom part of my knee, so I went over to the clinic. They think it's just inflammation, and gave me ice packs and Ibuprofen. I'm feeling better enough that I decided to take a nice slow ride home.
Not, though, before calling James to ask him to give me a ride home at 3:30. Some of my texts didn't get through, and he showed up at the campus at 1 to pick me up. He's awesome; I appreciate him caring, and feel bad he wasted a trip out.
The exam, by the way, went swimmingly. So there's that. *grins*
So this evening, I'm going to do laundry and, I think, take an evening away from math. I did math all weekend. I need to keep doing math too, but tonight I'll take a break with my urban geography paper.
