Good things for today!
Nov. 5th, 2014 08:42 pmSome good stuff about today:
The school is having a library book sale. I'm not one to spend on a whim, but they got me in a weak spot. I spent about $40 on books, and picked up a bunch of great stuff. I only planned to pick up a few things, but I ended up making three large stacks of books, leaving one at a time up on the checkout table while I collected more. There was a book on the closing of the Chrysler engine plant here in Kenosha and how it affected the town. Neither I, nor the archives staff, knew that such a book existed! We need a copy for our local history collection for sure, and it fits in with my own interests in lots of ways.
I also got several books focused on post-industrial cities, a couple of books on urban history, and a book on urbanization in developing countries. There's a nice two volume set of annotated Sherlock Holmes stories, as well as a book of period photographs of settings in London where the Holmes stories take place. I found some more anthropology related things too, like James Scott's Seeing Like a State and Marshall Sahlins' Stone Age Economics. There's a bunch more stuff too, like a big Japanese Dictionary. I'll post a list of everything once I get them home. Someday I'll even have time to look through them. I tried to get a picture with my phone but it didn't come out.
The archivist let me study for the GRE all of today while I was working. This is the best place to work on campus, bar none, for numerous reasons. The practice was good and I feel like I'm continuing to make progress and solidify things like arithmetic operations involving exponents and figuring out ratios.
My mother is facilitating my studying as well, by taking my usual Wednesday/Thursday kitchen duties while I deal with test stuff and driving down to Chicago. She's awesome.
And finally, I think I look pretty good in these new thrift store jeans. That's always a nice thing. I tried to get a picture with my camera, thanks to my brother, but it didn't really come out either!
