One of the rare times that they're both on the wall rack at the same time. Hopefully my apartment will look well taken care of when the landlord comes in to cover my air conditioner while I'm away.

I'm going to have to move my loft bed because one leg is in front of the A/C. Which means I have to move all the stuff *under* my loft bed that keeps it from moving. My desk with my monitors and stereo equipment, the loudspeakers, the bike trailer that's next to the speaker, the boxes of board games next to the bike trailer....

Apartment Tetris!
Dec. 15th, 2015 04:52 pmThese are in my little studio apartment, hooked up to my Marantz 2220. 14" woofers with ducted ports. I turn the bass knob all the way down to nothing after 8 o'clock or so. They were my grandfather's and that connection to him makes me happy. Plus, listening to horrid little computer speakers gives me a headache after long enough.
I had to move this stuff out of the way though, for my landlord to put a cover on my air conditioner. My loft bed was blocking that, and these were blocking my loft bed, and boxes and a bike trailer were blocking these....
That's my turntable on the right one and my stand-alone AM/FM tuner on the left.

Jedi Glorifying Violence?
Dec. 15th, 2015 08:52 pmThe Star Wars profile-picture generator that makes it look like you have a lightsaber is nifty, but, and maybe I'm becoming a pacifist in my old age, it feels like it's missing the point of the Jedi order. Violence as a last resort, right? Sometimes not even then, depending on the situation? It keeps making me think of this great bit of writing by Ferrett Steinmetz about how Yoda *should* have been portrayed in the prequels. He didn't need to be a fighter at all; as he said himself, wars do not make one great.
It's kind of like advertising the work that, I don't know, UN peacekeepers or something, do by making flashy posters where they're all standing around with guns out. There's some cognitive dissonance for me.

Road Trip!
Dec. 15th, 2015 09:53 pmI'm going to finalize packing and get to bed pretty soon. I didn't sleep much last night and I'd like to be fresh. Hopefully I won't wake up in the middle of the night again...
I'm going to see if I can pick the car up any earlier so I can get a jump start on the trip. And as for getting to the rental place, I've been kind of itching to take a nice long hike. I'm just going to walk the 4.4 miles to DeWitt. Maybe I'll go through Thornden Park on the way; it's pretty.
I got an offline map app installed, and I have cell data as a backup too, so I think I'm set there. I'm going to see this enormous train trestle first, then a spillway with a legendary number of carp, and then probably straight to Chicago. I expect I'll stop somewhere along the way for nap and other random photography. There's more wonderful weirdness in Ohio and Pennsylvania, but it'll be dark when I go through. Maybe I can hit the museum dedicated to the US presidents before Washington on the way back east.
I my potential ride from Chicago to Kenosha doesn't come through, I'll aim to get into the area early, drop my stuff off in Kenosha, then drive back to Chicago.
So there we are! I'll talk to you once I'm in the Midwest again.
