There's a seriously mixed metaphor in one of the articles I'm coding for Danae.

''It's an appalling proposal,'' Mr. Perry said. ''What they are giving with one hand, which is one step forward, they are taking away with the other, which is two steps back.''

It sounds like he's playing Twister.

I often dismount my bike by standing on just my left foot on the pedal as I swing my right foot up and over the frame and onto the ground, and then stepping off the pedal in a moving dismount. Several hundred miles back, I noticed that the bearings on my left pedal were shot. Too much weight too frequently I guess. My foot kept slipping off the pedal when the cranks spun around and the pedal didn't. I mostly avoided it by acquiring an intuitive sense of how much pressure to use in applying my foot.

More recently, that pedal started feeling kind of...weird...under my foot. It felt narrower and unstable somehow. Looking more closely, I found that the bearings are not the only problem anymore. I finally ordered some replacements online; reasonably well-recommended all-metal ones that hopefully have tougher bearings too.

I'm also going to get a stronger seat post clamp to keep my saddle from slipping down as I ride. I've been ignoring that issue since buying a new seat post a month or two ago, and using stops at red lights to occasionally readjust. The one I want is not available easily online so I'll order it through the local bike store. It's easy to find cheap, lousy parts online, but I think some of the nice stuff must not sell enough to be worth mass-marketing?
