It's coincidental that I've started reading this time of year, but it makes for good holiday presents to myself! Four more books arrived yesterday.

*Pat Miller - How to Foster Dogs
*Mario Salvador - Why Buildings Stand Up
*Matthys Levy and Mario Salvadori - Why Buildings Fall Down
*Niki Smith - Crossplay

A quotation from the NYT Book Review of Why Buildings Fall Down: "The reader is sure to find the disaster that suits his or her taste."

As I uploaded a photo today, I learned that Flickr is going to block free accounts with over 1000 photos from uploading more of them, and may begin deleting the oldest photos past that limit. Since I have 6,246 images there, that will be a problem. Maybe I need to look into hosting my images on server space I'm managing myself. Danae has space she's offered to let me use and there must be some good open source image-based content management software out there?

Anyway, this is the abandoned UFO on Route 66 that you can look for me inside of when I disappear.

From the same trip as the UFO (a drive to Oklahoma with Lisa for a free dental clinic because accessible healthcare is for wealthy people), this is the Pensacola Dam, also called the Grand River Dam. At about 6,500 feet long, It's the longest dam of it's type on the planet.

This is one of my favorite kinds of things to photograph.

A conversation about historical preservation vs. the needs of people to have accessible buildings is making me feel like a bad person.

I really think that the rights (not just needs, but *rights*) of disabled folks to have access to things outweighs historic preservation issues. But I can understand where the preservationists are coming from and I sympathize with them.
