Heating System
Feb. 8th, 2021 11:44 amI feel like a doofus for not tweaking our heating system earlier.
We have hot water radiators, which I've never dealt with before. Our apartment has also been consistently cold the whole time we've been here. The temperature wouldn't get above 19, even if we tried setting the thermostat higher.
Yesterday, after poking at the water heater for a bit, I finally read about how to bleed the radiators and did so. I'm not sure how much difference that made itself, but while I was doing it I noticed that the hot water piping was not very hot anywhere in the unit. Even the radiators that were on were not getting hot water. But while I was bleeding the radiators, the input pipe starting warming up as hot water came through it.
We've had most of the radiators closed, and I thought maybe there just needed to be more circulation in the whole system so I opened them all. Now the pipes are hot and the apartment is warm. Reading more, I learned that there should be approximately ten degrees of loss between input and output on the radiators, and that can be tweaked by managing circulation volume via the inlet valve. Now that the system seems to be in equilibrium, I'll give that a try with our IR thermometer.
And our interior spaces are up to 20.5 degrees, which is a huge improvement!
