Serin and I tried a new restaurant today; a Japanese place that's only a Few Minutes from work. We talked about going a couple times, but finally made it there today. I was a little worried that I wouldn't know what to order that I could deal with; I'm horribly picky about food and I've worried that I wouldn't be able to adjust to the cuisine if I were to visit.

I need not have been so worried. I saw shrimp tempura on the menu and ordered that. I knew what shrimp was and I knew what tempura was, so I figured I could deal with that. I thought there might be the odd vegetable, but I could eat around that, right? Serin ordered teriyaki salmon which sounded interesting too, but I figured I'd stick with what I knew.

The first thing that came out was hot towels on a tray. Fortunately I'd just been reading up on Japanese dining etiquette a day or two ago and realized that these were for washing our hands. This was fancier than I expected! And more authentic than I'd even hoped for; the staff all seemed to be native Japanese and were conversing back and forth in their own tongue. I think I even caught a word or two.

My appetizer arrived; it was a salad of some sort, with some yellow-brown grainy substance on it passing for dressing. Serin's came with miso soup, which I would have preferred; salad's never really been my thing. But the atmosphere already had me feeling a bit like I was in someone else's house and didn't know how to behave, and when I'm in that state of mind, I sometimes feel hugely pressured to eat what I'm given if someone is feeding me. So I took hashi in hand and scooped a little into my mouth. It wasn't too bad; in fact, while waiting for the rest of the meal and talking to Serin, I ate about a quarter to a third of the small bowl. Then our main courses got there.

My shrimp tempura included shrimp, long green vegetables, a large red oval, a smaller green oval, and a thing that looked like a wagon wheel. I don't really know what any of it was apart from the shrimp, but it was so good that I ate all of it anyway. And it was presented in such an eye catching way; the wagon wheel was flat on the bottom and everything else was propped up around it in a sort of pyramid. There was a separate little bowl of soy sauce for dipping and a third bowl full of sticky rice. It was all fantastic! I ate everything on my plate, and even had a small sample of Serin's salmon. I think it was the best salmon I've ever had.

I can't wait to go back again. I want to try a few other things, the salmon defintely being one of them. I need to learn a couple of relevant phrases. I would have loved to express my appreciation of the food, but I would have been embarrassed to use my smattering of vocabulary to say "food is good!".

It's probably not somewhere I'll go hugely often, but I definitely want to get there with [livejournal.com profile] wooisme and [livejournal.com profile] posicat, who I'm sure will appreciate the salmon. Maybe he can offer me a few suggestions on things I'd like too.

Well, I'm sitting on the futon with House on the television and a gorgeous girl, so I'm going to sign off. 'Till later!
