Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] posicat's phone hacking, I was on the internet and VPNd to my home network on the ride home from work yesterday via a Bluetooth connection to my cell phone from my laptop. The connection has a little latency, but it's pretty darn fast once it gets going on something. I can't describe how cool it is to be able to sit in the passenger seat of a car and catch up on email, look at Livejournal, and browse through my bank records and update Quicken. Very nice. The acrobatic route that the test email I sent to [livejournal.com profile] wooisme has to have taken boggles me. From my laptop, to my phone, to the cell tower, to Sprint's network, to their internet gateway, to my mail server at home, then back out of the house to Yahoo's mail servers, then back into the house again and to Andrea's computer where she's connected to Yahoo's webmail. And all that plus a return trip (her email to tell me she got my email) in less than a minute. It's just staggering if you really think about it. It's a heck of a power suck on the phone and laptop though. I only get about forty-five minutes. I think my battery is dying anyway; maybe my upgrade I'm getting later this year will last longer.

I'm looking forward to using Bitpim to play with my phone some more too, as time permits. I'm going to create a custom ring tone that's just a 2600hz tone. No, it doesn't really do anything anymore. But I still think it's kind of cool.

I brought home a few more parts from work including a RAID backplane that I think will fit into four or five 5ΒΌ bays. I have two more 19" monitors, so I might be replacing two 17s with them. Does anyone need another 17? [livejournal.com profile] netrage?

Got Andrea's cell phone charging via a variable voltage, multi-tip power supply I had sitting in the basement. I'll take free over 8 plus shipping online or 20 at Best Buy. I had no idea what voltage it took, so I just turned it up one notch at a time and kept plugging it in until it seemed to work. That thing has a tiny little plug on it.

I know, not much of substance here today. Maybe more later.
