My wrist is really bugging me again today. It's been particularly noticable the last week or two. Maybe part of it is the cold. But still, I think I should do something about it.

My managers have been really good about buying me some ergonomic stuff. My first one here bought a Kinesis Advantage for me, and the second one bought an Evoluent Vertical Mouse for me. Those have helped, but I've also been eyeing up a USB foot pedal that I can map some keys onto. I want to move shift and tab to a foot pedal. That will keep me from having to continually stretch my left pinky out to hit them and I think that's what's causing a lot of the soreness on that wrist.

While thinking about that, it ocurred to me that, if I got two foot pedals, I could probably significantly speed up typing and data entry. I could put enter, space, and maybe control on one, and put shift, tab, and something else, maybe the down arrow since I use that more than up in my program menus, on the other one. That would be slick! And, if one of those foot pedals is the one from Kinesis that plugs directly into the keyboard, and the other one is the one from X-keys that's a separate USB device controlled by their macro software, they wouldn't interfere with each other. How cool would that be?

[livejournal.com profile] serinthia pointed out that that would probably take some coordination, but I think that having to do something that's physically similar to the action of triggering a base drum pedal while typing would make the chore more fun too.

Unfortunately, plain old USB transcription control pedals don't seem to work for what I'm doing. There was one around the office that I plugged in to the computer. I can get it to work with transcription software that's expecting to see it, but I can't figure out any way at all to get the pedal-keys to do anything useful outside of those programs. Anybody out there want to write a driver for me? *giggles*

But anyway, since I'm not sure if my manager is in a hardware-ordering mood after I just got a system upgrade plus an extra graphics card, if my mate will ok the budgetary hit, I think I'll order at least one of those. Not sure which one yet....
