Feb. 23rd, 2008 03:49 pmBefore I left work on Friday, my manager passed on an invitation to our department from CDW. There' s a party happening at Dave and Buster's in Addison. We have the option to take one other person along and go for free to eat, drink, and play games. In addition, American English, who I'm told are a very popular Beatles cover band, is going to be providing entertainment for the assembled throng. Sounds great, eh?
Well, I'm a bit nervous about corporate events like that. I've never actually been to one. I had the chance to go to Disneyworld with the whole company at the end of my first year with my current employer but I weaseled out of it to staff the help desk instead. It's ok; Wink said there were so many system upgrades to do, he never got out of the hotel room, so I didn't miss much. Plus, I would have been deathly worried about seeing members of the senior executive group multiple times and having no clue who they were, so it's just as well I didn't have to go.
This one wouldn't be quite as worrisome I suppose. I wouldn't be likely to know many of the people there since they're all random CDW clients. Still, the idea that I'd be expected to talk to some of them makes me nervous. I could probably get away from having to do that by spending my time eating and playing games though. The music would be really cool too; I'd love to watch a live drummer now that I'm starting to be interested in that sort of things myself.
Unfortunately, I can't go. It's the Friday of next week, which is the day I took off work so we can leave early to go with my family to the Wisconsin Dells. Oh well; so it goes.
Andrea and I are visiting
polymorphism today, who is in from Nebraska today to visit people in Elgin. In fact, as I type this, we have just merged onto IL-53 south on the way there. I'm connected to the internet via my cell phone thanks to
posicat's machinations. For some reason, it occurred to me a few minutes ago that I could be really cool and check my work email on the road via VPN. I shortly realized that this will only inspire annoyance at the massive cluelessness of my coworkers; I disconnected swiftly.
I was a little bit stressed about losing time spent cleaning today since tomorrow is devoted to going to see my grandfather. But I've used the trip to catch up on my bank account (I'm balanced and up to date!) and
moiracoon and I are making lists of things to look for for the house, and to bring with to eat at the Dells, and for me to remember not to forget, and I feel good about being productive. We're going to clean up this evening, and tomorrow I'm bringing some 78s and LPs to digitize on his equipment for him and just spend some time with him since I don't see him enough.
Oh! There's Medievel Times over there! One of these days maybe I'll go there and laugh about how much better ren faire is.
Anyway, I think I should shut this thing down and talk to my sweetie some. 'Till later!
