Mar. 17th, 2008 10:01 amTo wash away the flavour of the dark and serious post I just wrote, here's one that, though equally serious, is of a much lighter nature.
One of my favorite authors, Catherynne Valente (
yuki_onna), has begun a project that I'm truly excited about being a part of. In compensation for a small monthly subscription, members receive a copy of a short story written specially for the audience of subscribers, autographed and sealed with wax. I've never received anything sealed with wax in my life! *laughs* When I was much younger- in my early teens I suppose- I really wanted to buy myself a seal and some wax from a vendor at Gen-Con. The notion had great appeal to my sense of romance and nostalgia, though I didn't find a design that appealed to me deeply enough. Maybe I'll look again around the renaissance faires this summer.
If you've never read anything by her, please allow me to direct your consideration to The Orphan's Tales. I had no idea how appropriate a gift the book would be for my dear
moiracoon until I dashed out over lunch to pick it up from the Borders that I'd ordered it from and began to page through it. Fairy tales are one of my dear one's favorite things, and this was a wonder of a fairy tale that immediately became the bed time story that, time allowing, I read to her at the end of our day. It's a difficult book to find words to describe apart from the entirely appropriate, if probably over-used, phrase, achingly beautiful.
Life has been so busy for us that we haven't managed to get through the whole thing yet. It's amazing how quickly your days and nights fill up. I've been itching to tear through the rest of it, but it's a special enough story that I'm waiting to share the rest of it with my love.
But to return to my main point, I wanted to bring the attention of all the fantasy (and sci-fi/steampunk [I'm looking at you
sabrinageek]) readers on my list to the chance to get in at the beginning of a singular chance to join this sacred circle at it's inception. If you're interested, go read about the The Omikuji Project here.
And now, I really ought to get back to work. We have an unannounced company-wide meeting tomorrow that, despite being announced as 'really urgent', we have yet to get a definite time for. At the same time, our stock price is hugely down from last year, we've been laying off contractors left and right, and my team lead has been expressing his opinion, even prior to the advent of this meeting, that we are ripe for a buyout. Wish me luck....
