Oct. 26th, 2008 12:21 pmWell, I was going to post this to an auto-repair community. That was before I looked and was unable to find one!
poorskills did show up when I searched for car repair in interests, but I don't think that one is very oriented toward what I'm looking for.
On
sabrinageek's advice, I tried to check the bearings on my Neon. I think that's what the issue is, but I'm a little hesitant. Serin and I both thought the noise was coming from the passenger side, but that side seems fine. On the driver's side, there was just the tiniest amount of play when I grabbed the tire at 12 and 6 and wiggled it. Enough to make a little clunk, but not really enough to see.
After I took the wheel, brake caliper, and rotor off, I tried wiggling the spindle where it sticks out of the steering knuckle by grabbing the studs. Still that little clunk, and if I very closely look at the CV boot and drive axle on the other side of the knuckle, I can see it move almost imperceptibly along with the spindle. I'm guessing that means that there's play in the bearing, which means it needs to be replaced. The other side of the car has no play whatsoever, which leads me to think that the clunk and slight wiggle on the driver side is significant. I just wish I knew what I was looking at better. It's such a small amount of movement that it's hard to think it's an issue. Plus, it seeming to be on the wrong side kind of throws me. People who do this for a living deserve a lot of respect. (Much like those who fix computers for a living...)
And on the KIA... well, KIAs are weird. The lug nuts on the back wheels are one piece with the studs which come completely out of the drum. And then, once they were off, I simply could not figure out how to get the drum off, and there does not seem to be any way to access the star wheel adjuster inside the drum from the back.
The KIA is making a loud hum from what sounds like the rear passenger side wheel, but only when going between about 50 and 54 miles an hour. Slower or faster than that and it's fine, and it's loudest in the middle of the significant range, tapering off to the outside edges. Maybe I'll just have to have Andrea take it to the mechanic. I remember being unable to figure out how to get the front brakes done too. I'll probably look for a Haynes manual; I looked once, not terribly thoroughly (the one store I tried didn't have them in), not long after we bought it, but haven't since.
And now for a shower. I know we'll have trick or treaters today, but I don't want to be that scary!
