Nov. 5th, 2008 11:27 amI feel very good about the results of the election last night. I feel good about my future. To be honest, I'm not that concerned about the economy. I expect to see increasing global destabilization as world consumption of oil outstrips ability to supply it, though, much as the energy crisis in the '70s did, this current depression and recession may slow down the approach of that point just a little bit. No, my primary motiviations are environmental policy and civil rights. And on environmental policy and civil rights, we've made a phenomenal choice.
I'm not completely satisfied with Barack on the environment. I'd rather see a carbon tax over a cap-and-trade system, and I wish we'd be a little more willing to explore the use of breeder reactors as power sources on top of more renewable energy use (yes, I break with most of my 'far-left- ideology here), but all in all, I like him on energy much more than McCain, who'd jump into the band-aid measure of drilling for more oil in sensitive areas, like a parasite looking for the last drops of blood in its dying host. It makes me wish for a viable Green party candidate, and we didn't have any local Greens on my ballot either, unfortunately.
But on civil rights? With Palin on the ticket, the choice of Obama/Biden over McCain/Palin looks to me like the choice of the monks who transcribed and saved books through the dark ages over the barbarians who were burning them. I feel very good about having helped that to happen.
I'm glad that I was in the vicinity of Grant Park with
rileybear67 last night. Though we didn't get in to even the overflow gathering, it was a really neat place to be, and the energy and positive thought was infectious and exciting. I loved seeing the huge variety of people in the street of all ages and colors. It felt like togetherness.
