stormdogI got back about a few hours ago from a really great trip out to Rochelle. I have some pictures I'll post later, but for now, here's one from a stop in Woodstock (my grandfather wanted to show me the Woodstock Opera House).
Note my grandfather's feet. You can see where a portion of my non-conformity comes from here. *grins*
As we drove through the countryside on the way there, grandpa talked about so many of the people whose horses he used to shoe out there as we drove by their houses and farms, and I just so loved listening to his stories. I wish I'd bought that little audio recorder I was looking at a while ago so I could record them. I'm going to do that next month, and carry it around in my camera bag.
After getting home, I finally fired up the forge (It's been over a year! Shame on me!) and flattened out the ends of a couple of railroad spikes in preparation for converting them to plant hangers. (Hear that![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-userinfo.gif)
red_ceilidh? Your plant hangers are finally underway! *grins*) Maybe I'll post pictures that show off the contrast between the rusty and pitted half of the spikes and the smooth shiny half that I worked. While swinging the hammer I started out too light, but I could hear, clear as anything, my grandfather saying, as he did the first time I worked metal under his supervision, "You've got to wail on it!". It's been a while, but as I shut down for the night, I again felt comfortable applying some good force to the hammer and moving significant metal around.
Anyway, I'm tired and will go to bed shortly. I had such a wonderful day with my family and I'm just really content. I miss my grandpa. I need to go see him more. Fortunately,moiracoon and I get to do that tomorrow! More later! *hugs*
