Aug. 22nd, 2009 08:14 amThere were some kick-ass clouds on the way to Starved Rock. I guess that's one of the bonuses to driving in the rain. Must remember to do that more often.

You know, I like driving a lot more now that I don't have to do it every day. I love being able to commute via public transit; it's awesome. Makes me want even more to live in Chicago. Or be filthy rich.
I hung around the house 'till about one yesterday, being lazy and communing with the raccoon. It was worth not having as much time at Starved Rock. Totally.
I made it there about five, bought some food at a little grocery store in Utica, and took a few pictures of a church steeple framed by grain elevator silos.
I hiked up to Starved Rock itself, and around a few trails. I parked for the night back in Utica, in front of a church. I folded down the back seats and ensconced myself mostly in the trunk. That trick works decently well, though my sleep was kind of restless. Thanks to
moiracoon for reminding me to take the blanket, without which things might have been difficult.
I woke up this morning about six and drove to the campgrounds to sneak a shower. I got picked up by a staff truck and driven over there. He asked me what site I was at and I explained that I'd gotten in way too late to register, which was true, and that I was going to sign in today (which I knew I couldn't do because the lot was full). He stopped to talk to somebody a short way down the road and I jumped out to get to the shower building. I then found a little path back to where I parked that avoided the major roads. Nifty!
This morning, I hiked to Aurora canyon and took some pictures. I'm getting them copied over and checking email and I'm about to go hike the rest of the trail system here. Have fun this weekend!
