laureth on this September 11th. The mood in the air on this day makes me uncomfortable, and this is a lot of why.
It has been 12 years since the planes flew into the buildings.
If you're one of the many who lost a wife or husband, sister or brother, parent, child, friend, beloved co-worker - someone you loved - my heart grieves with you. The pain may lessen with time, but you can never really forget.
If the collapsing buildings and collapsing economy took away your job and your home, if they ended life as you knew it, if it's never been the same, I hear you. My heart goes out to you, and I understand how you can never really forget.
If the fallout from the politics dragged you along with it, if there are things you can't talk about, if you or your family were drawn into the military, if you are the walking wounded, if you still deal with the effect of that day 12 years ago, you cannot forget either.
But to the rest of you:
To the people who didn't know anyone, not even a friend of a friend, who was affected,
To the people that cheered on the wars and watched them on 24-hour cable but didn't fight in them,
To the people whose biggest involvement is sharing a red, white 'n blue flag-wavin' meme,
To the people that still use 9/11 as an excuse to hate,
You should know:
We toppled the regime that sheltered the terrorists.
We killed the mastermind and threw his body in the sea.
We avenged those deaths, many times over, not just on their operatives and fighters, but on civilians - women and children and elders.
Why do you keep picking at that wound and letting it fester?
Why can't you accept that we won?
