(no subject)
May. 29th, 2014 01:56 pmI was aware of some of these issues before a friend shared this essay about the history of racial discrimination and the meaning of reparations on her wall. I just read Sugrue's "Origins of the Urban Crisis," for instance, which discusses a number of the issues here, especially residential segregation and discriminatory housing policy. A podcast I listen to, Backstory, also just had an episode on the history of home ownership, and they talked a bit about the Contract Buyers' League, so it was neat to see that subject covered in more depth.
I haven't seen these things put in the context of a discussion about reparations though, nor have I been exposed to the concept of reparations as being something springing not just from historical issues of slavery, or even more recent historical issues of discrimination, but continuing all the way into the present with racially discriminatory sub-prime mortgages for instance. It was worth reading and thinking about.
