I'm going to give up a little bit of control. This is something that is hard for me. But I've also realized that I'm never, ever going to get through any reasonable amount of photo backlog without letting myself post large groups of images without individualized editing.
Someday I'm going to put together a web page to present myself as a photographer. It will get what I feel like are the best of the best of my work. Pictures that I love, that I give personalized attention to in Photoshop to make them (and me) look their best. Flickr will be my place to share large amounts of photos that don't make that cut, but that I still want to share. Photographs that are either more documentary in nature (like my theatre collection), or that I just feel are neat and pretty enough to want to show them to the world.
I'm starting with some photos from a walk around Evanston, Illinois' Northwestern University campus that I took this past weekend.
danaeris is a grad student there. I met she and a couple other folks for lunch on Monday, then she took me on a little tour before she went back to work. She knew I'd fall in love with the brutalist library building designed by Walter Netsch, and she was right. There are a lot of other pretty things on the campus too. Another Netsch building or two, an 1889-built observatory (with functional refracting telescope!), a peaceful garden dedicated to the bard, and even some wildlife.
I'm going to open with a shot of the library, because I just think it's awesome.

But there's a lot more
More of the library. I love this building so hard.

The lighting was not always perfect that day. But the way you can see the interior lighting through the windows is great. It works with and adds to the exterior forms. I may try to take some night shots later on.

I happened to be visiting the campus during a power-washing of University Library. This provided a good number of photographic opportunities. I love the way that the blocky masses of concrete can overwhelm the lone worker even as the human figure humanizes the scene and offers a scale reference.

----------
This is a maze of pipes visible through the windows of the Central Utility Plant.

----------
The 1889-built Dearborn observatory contains a functioning refracting telescope that is still used as a teaching tool for the astronomy program.

----------
This walkway was under the area of the library that was being washed to protect pedestrians from water and falling equipment.

----------
This bike was getting some use even while its owner was away.

----------
Another brutalist work by Walter Netsch, this is the Hogan Building.

----------
There were a large number of these birds who'd tucked their nests into corners of the library building. When I first looked up to find the source of the 'chirp-chirp' noises I was hearing, I thought these were paper wasp hives and just about turned tail right then. Upon closer investigation though, I realized there were bird heads peeping out at me from within. I turned the ISO up to maximum and tried to get a few shots of the nests' occupants.
