At this point, after checking my symptoms online, I'm pretty sure I have a fractured rib. Which is probably no big deal. There's not much to be done about it by a doctor; it'll just heal on it's own in four to six weeks. So I guess I'll wait! My only worry is whether bicycling will make it worse. Maybe I'll just drive the rest of this week and keep giving it a rest.

I read that it's important to consciously take a deep breath at least every hour or so to keep my lungs expanded fully and prevent pneumonia.. Doing so is slightly painful, but I think it's helpful. It's lead to a lot of throat-clearing and a little coughing, which makes me think maybe I'm clearing out a little fluid from my lungs. I must have been breathing a little shallowly without being conscious of it.

Did I mention my discovery at the archives? As I work at barcoding and entering every Wisconsin Historical Society item we hold here, I found a series of tax rolls for the city of Kenosha (name changed from Southport just that year!) that go back to 1850; about 17 years earlier than the earliest ones I knew of. I don't know know why they were in a different series, but I was really excited to realize they're there, and dashed off with volume one to show the rest of the staff! 'Cause I'm a dork.

Check out this title page!

1850 Southport Tax Roll

My first thought was amazement at the skill and style of this hand-lettering.

But my second thought was that it looks like the title page of a high-school student's notebook, done during the first class session while ignoring a teacher. I mean, how many font styles do you really need to have in one document? It's funny how unprofessional this looks to me now. But then, this was done in a town that was only a little over ten years old in a far-flung frontier by some guys who decided to come out and start a settlement. I can kind of imagine them having the sort 'we're in charge of the club-house' mentality that this kind of self-important lettering suggests.

It was a long time ago. I can only guess, and show you pictures of nifty artifacts!
