I spent my lunch hour half-an-hour (I've volunteered for a short lunch four days in a row. We've been way busy and I'm more than happy to take overtime and not have to stay late for it.) sitting in my truck and playing with one of my new toys from our weekend thrift store expeditions.

We found some good stuff at the Kenosha/Racine thrift stores on Saturday. Andrea found lots of salable goodies and I picked up a number of books. I found Berkely Breathed's Red Ranger Came Calling, the Griffon and Sabine trilogy (a really neat set of books whose pages have actual envelopes with little letters and things inside of them. All the bits seem to be present and the books are a boxes set in beautiful shape!), and Winston Churchill's five or six volume history of World War Two. That's quite a departure for me. Ordinarily I've found little to no interest in modern history but I saw this nice boxed set of books and for some reason I bought them. I guess I decided that it really is something I ought to know about and that it might be more interesting to read an account written by someone who was such a huge part of it. I really do hope to read them; we'll see if it ever happens.

I have a few things from the Michigan City thrift stores too. Andrea and I stopped there on the way home on Monday evening. Is that too fanatical? Anyway, I picked up another CED Videodisc. See, I bought The Last Starfighter there last time and then realized that the disc caddy didn't match the case it was in; I think I bought the wrong movie. Then, Monday, I found another videodisc case with a mismatched disc caddy; I suspect the 48 Hours case that's now in the back of my truck actually contains a copy of The Last Starfighter. Which means that I've likely got a videodisc case emblazoned with aliens and starfighters in my living room that has an Eddie Murphy/Nick Nolte cop movie in it. I couldn't believe it was still there; it'd been at least a month. As Andrea pointed out, the turnover on that sort of merchandise is probably pretty low, but I was worried that they'd be thrown away.

Apart from that, I found two more toys in that snow covered Indiana thrift store; two vintage slide rules. Those are what I spent my lunch time playing with, trying to learn how to operate them. They both have original cases and one even has it's instruction book! These are beautiful things and as I struggled through my first couple multiplications with one I was struck by the simple beauty of the instrument. No, they aren't exactly precise, but they are a wonderful tool and must have been absolutely indispensable before the advent of calculators. Very nifty.

Andrea is home today being a busy little raccoon. I am so excited for her; I know how long she's been wishing for time to do this and for a chance to be away from her job. I love you sweetie! *kisses [livejournal.com profile] wooisme on the forehead*

The weekend was wonderful. Andrea told me once that, after a family trip, her mother would always ask her children what the best part was. Andrea and I like to do that now after the trips we take. It's a nice way to sort of cement the most memorable experiences in our heads and learn about what events meant to each of us. The best parts of this weekend were so many that I just can't narrow them down to one or two.

I loved Sunday evening, spend playing Dark Tower with my parents and Timothy. I loved Sunday night, spend in small room with my brother and my sweetie, talking and laughing as I troubleshot my mother's computer (I think I got it mostly workable again). I loved our trip out for dinner with our Chicago friends, ([livejournal.com profile] emrldgrrl, [livejournal.com profile] unclevlad, [livejournal.com profile] rennie_frog, and [livejournal.com profile] wyldkyttin. I loved driving around my old hometown with my wife (Wow. She's my wife now. *giggles*) in our quest to investigate every thrift store in the area. I loved sitting upstairs with my brother and Lara, hanging out as they played Final Fantasy XI on their side by side computers or joined me in games of Mister Mosquito and Burnout 3. It was a fantastic weekend and I wouldn't change anything about it.

That reminds me; my brother bought Mister Mosquito for me. This is a typically funky Japanese game where you play a mosquito who has to suck blood from the three members of the Yamada family. Since the day we heard of it coming out in Japan, Jim and I said 'That is so weird. We must have it!' We opened the package Saturday night and tried it out. Yes, it's odd. What they don't tell you in the ads is that this game is dirty! Not explicit; just dirty. OF course, Jim and I both find this highly amusing... I finally have my X-Box again too; I can start carjacking people on the streets of Liberty City!

That, once again, is probably more than enough for now. I just want to thank Bob_cat and [livejournal.com profile] farm_cat for having us over. I love you mom and dad!
