Piper Update
Apr. 1st, 2017 02:56 pmPiper is back home after surgery. She's on a schedule IV controlled substance (Tramadol) for pain, so she was pretty out of it yesterday. She's been a little bit more alert today, but mostly just stays in one place and alternates between napping and lying still.

She now has shaved patches on both of her front legs, from the three IV insertions she's had in the past couple of weeks. This is a pressure bandage to let the insertion heal for just an hour or so before removing it. It complements her e-collar!
She was eating well yesterday, but has little appetite this morning. It's also been really hard to get her pills into her. She's on two antibiotics. Normally it would be just one, but because she's diabetic they're being extra cautious. She's on Clavamox and Baytril.

The surgeon removed the head of her femur as well as a short piece of the body. I can guess at how much residual pain that must leave after my recent, less invasive, wrist surgery.
She also had five masses removed from her mammary glands, including one of her nipples that was involved. I'm not going to roll her around to get pictures of that right now. She's dealing with it as well as anyone could hope a dog would.
She's tiredly letting us move her around. I did the passive range of motion exercises she needs with her repaired leg, and she was calm and quiet. We carried her outside last night to pee. I was really happy that we got her to go; I wasn't sure if she would at first. But because she can't posture very well, she kind of soaked herself, and she was relatively patient as we cleaned her in the bathroom.
She now has about a quarter of her body shaved; the whole right rear flank. She kind of looks like a little piggy from the right angle.

Just a few minutes ago, she stared whining in the open bottom half of her crate, where we have her sitting on the couch. I didn't go see what she needed immediately, and in less than a minute she had peed in her crate. Fortunately, Danae had just gotten home and we got her cleaned up together. Then, I held her carefully on the bathroom counter while Danae clipped short all the hair around her butt and hind legs. She's already shaved in lots of places, so we decided to sacrifice looks to make her as easy to clean as possible.
So anxious and stressed. I stopped at the shelter today and got some pill pockets, and she ate her Tramadol inside of one without complaint, so that's a relief. She spat out the last one five or six times while I tried to get it in her.
