Monday, a coworker said something along the lines of 'You're always here; you must have a lot of PTO time saved up!' I didn't know, so I figured out how to see my available PTO and I'm up to about 65 hours. A week and a half isn't an enormous amount, but it's enough to do something with. I could take a whole week off and have nine days to get somewhere far, far away and back. It would be *so good* to be isolated from the greater world with my camera for a week.
The main problem with this is that the kind of trip I love to take is not Danae compatible. I love traveling dirt cheap, sleeping in my car and eating ravioli or baked beans out of cans, or eating two meals' worth of food for the price of one at cheap buffets. "Cabbits," said Danae, my cat-bunny, "do not sleep in cars." Nor would that method of sustenance work for her.
I've found places via Couchsurfing before and had a great time, but I realize that can be much more intimidating for female-identified people and Danae does not feel safe doing that. Even the cheapest kind of cheap motels would add considerably to the cost of the trip and especially since she's not going to be receiving a stipend this Summer, I don't think that's workable. I think my options are either go alone or find someone I know who's willing to put us up for a week, which is a pretty tall order and limits my potential destinations. I would feel guilty, though, using up a bunch of PTO without her, and she has been feeling down and stressed about her work. I will have to think on this further.
I've wanted for a long time to go on another long wandering road to see kitsch, old theatres, infrastructure, and what-not. I did a Google search for the tallest bridges in the country and found the Royal Gorge Bridge in CaƱon City, Colorado. That would be an excellent focal point. Roadside America shows me plenty of weird things around there to see, and I'm sure there will be some old theatres and interesting architecture too. I'm already eagerly bouncing around the 'net to see where I might go. I've never been to the Southwest, and while I probably won't go all the way to the Grand Canyon or the Hoover Dam and back like I've wished to, it looks like Colorado would be a ton of fun to explore.
And I just really really want to *go* somewhere. It's been so long...
