Aug. 7th, 2018 07:53 amI noticed a loose spoke on my back wheel last Friday. I put the bike on the rack and tightened it up Sunday. The wheel was pretty close to true.
After getting back home Monday afternoon, a couple other spokes seemed loose. I tightened them, comparing tension by tapping them to hear them ring. Not precise, but it seemed effective. I got the wheel even truer than last time.
Today, about a mile from work, I heard a sort of ping from the back wheel and it went out of true again. An examination before locking up at work confirmed my fears that I'd broken a spoke again. I can't just tighten that up. I could buy a new spoke and take the wheel off and get the cassette off the hub and put the new spoke on and put it all back together. But if the spoke tensions are all messed up anyway, who knows if it wouldn't just break again.
This sucks. I wish I knew whether this wheel was just bad, or if I'm too heavy for it, or if I tightened spokes unevenly, or what. I may drop by the Recyclery on Saturday to ask about a used replacement wheel. (This one isn't even that old.) That and I'm going to do some pricing of new wheels. Not that I have much money to spend on one right now...
