While Danae and I are in Canada, I want to talk to her parents about what might happen if she and I decide we need to leave the US for reasons of safety. They may not take us seriously, but I have a real fear of a breakdown of order here. There are too many things reminiscent of fascism happening to ignore. Trump publicly making veiled threats of state and vigilante violence against his opponents is one of the worst, but only one of the most recent. It would have been really hard for me to imagine that, and the lack of concern about it from significant parts of the public, before his election.

Over and over, things keep happening that push the envelope. Threats of violence. Clear racism and sympathy for White nationalists. Calling journalists enemies of the people. Where will this end? I just don't know and I'd like to be prepared for the worst.

Italy, our third choice when we moved, begins to look very appealing now it's too late (see my latest).

Danae is really frustrated about Brexit too. She's a British citizen by way of her dad and it cuts off a lot options for her.

I deeply regret not having stayed in Belgium for a further three months back in the day as that would have given me rights to citizenship and I'd have been a dual national with an EU passport. :o(

Sadly, I can't prove my rights to a Latvian passport, even though I probably have them.

My only possible let in after that is being married to a native Scot if Scotland goes it's own way (and I also have Scottish ancestry myself).

I'm not married to Danae, though we've talked about doing so just to make a potential move to Canada easier for me. But even that isn't a guarantee they'll let me in to stay. This is all such a mess.

TBH I don't think anywhere is safe. If the US goes full fascist, we'll be right behind them.
