I'm wearing dangle earrings in trans colors that Erik made me and I have my hair back in a tail. My fingernails are dark red. Someone came into the library, saw me from behind, and addressed me as 'miss,' and seemed embarrassed when I turned and he saw my facial hair.

First time being called 'miss'! That's a new experience, having concrete evidence that some of the choices I'm making about my appearance are semiotically female. It makes me smile.

I realised things could not go on as was when I was fourteen and out with a mixed bunch of friends in a pub.

I was very unisex indeed by that time- pink t shirt, flared Levis and long hair.

I went to the loo and as I came back to my friends an old man said: ' 'scuse me, love, but did you know that was the gents you just used?' :o)

That's great! I hardly had a conception of self at all when I was fourteen, outside of liking to read books and not liking people much.
