I just got around to testing outgoing email on my rebuilt server and found that I was getting an error message as Mercury Mail Server's SMTP relay module tried to connect to my ISPs mail server. I looked at it and thought that maybe I had to put my username and password information in to authenticate to their mail server. Of course, I never actually use the username and password they provided, so I had to call up Comcast to get them to reset it for me because I'd forgotten within a day of it being given to me. Yes, I should write it down. I will next time. I'll need it to set up my usenet access.
I called them up and gave them my phone number. They had no record of it. I gave them Andrea's old cell phone number; they had no record of it. So, the tech asked me to read her the MAC address on the modem; they had no record of it. At that point that I realized there was probably a deeper problem here and I made an excuse to get off the phone. I looked a little closer at the modem and realized that, right there in front of my face, was a Time-Warner sticker. We don't have Comcast; we have Time-Warner. No wonder smtp.comcast.net wouldn't accept my email.
I feel brilliant.
