I finally disassembled the external USB CD burner I brough home from work. Just as I suspected, the contents were:

  • One standard 5ΒΌ IDE CD-ROM burner.
  • One DC power supply producing 12v and 5v from 120v AC.
  • One IDE interface to USB interface adapter board.
  • One small (I'd guess 40mm) fan.
  • A surprising quantity of screws.

All I need to do is buy a long narrow project box (the power supply is built to fit along the side of the drive) to put the power supply in, maybe buy a second fan and put one at each end of the box, and make the IDE cable stick out the top next to the Molex power connector, and I'll have a portable USB to IDE converter. Which means that I can use the entire medium-sized box full of four to eight GB drives as temporary backup media. I hope.

But for now, while Moira and I were visiting last night, my dad lent me his external 120GB USB drive which I've just finished the grueling process of backing most of my data up to. I'm about to embark on a Windows 2000 reinstall.

Wish me luck!
