The hardware fairy struck again, this time in the form of a delivery of vendor demos from Contour Designs. (At this point, Moira is probably wishing she had a fairy swatter.) Contained in the large, cardboard bundle of joy were six RollerMouse Pros. Since we will most likely never use these things in the company (it's very unusual for us to get vendor demos at all, so this was kind of odd to me), I took one home to see how well I like the thing and whether it's good for my wrists. I tried setting it up at work at first, but it doesn't seem to mesh very well with my GoldTouch keyboard. The tenting of the keyboard leads me to have to move my hands around oddly to get to the RollerMouse. On my flat IBM Model "M" however, it works out pretty well. I'm using it exclusively tonight to give me a chance to get used to it, so maybe I'll write again about what I think of it in a week. It definitely takes some getting used to, but it has a chance to grow on me.

Andrea and I had a wonderful time tonight having dinner with my parents. She made some superlative spinach lasagna (that would be "lasuana" for Lara's mom) that we all swiftly devoured and I had much fun hanging out with them and my brothers (and Lara). I'm so glad we've been keeping up with our intent to do this weekly.

I tried calling my friend Juan with an offer of paid assistance with my truck, but I haven't heard back. I know he's pretty busy, so I may just have to have it towed over to the service center. I just can't figure out why the back brake is stuck (or more to the point, I'm just not mechanically inclined enough to determine where the brake release cable is), so it's not currently drivable and I need to have it soon: Evil Bob is going to be moving to later hours and I won't be able to car-pool with him anymore.

I'm planning to buy a calendar soon so that I can start organizing things better. I'm starting to have more events coming up in the future and I'm definitely not able to keep them straight in my head without some kind of visual reference. I'd like to have a sort of reminder and calendar system on my computer not unlike that incorporated into Exchange Server. Any suggestions? Even for a server based solution; if I need to, I can set something up server-side on Alphawolf.

You know, it's weird looking at the sort of posts I write now, full of debate over the merits of various hardware, musings about repair work on my vehicles, and talk of the pleasant dinner I spend with my wife and family. I sound like a grownup. Fortunately, as a liberal fannish tech-geek, I will manage to avoid the fate of ever really growing up fully. Proof of this can be seen in living example in my parents who are both wonderfully open, interesting people who still have a hold on their belief in the magic of life that has shaped so much of my world-view. Still, it's amazing looking back on the sort of writing I produced in places like this and seeing the difference. I know that person who wrote those words was, is, me, because I remember, quite distinctly, sitting on an old blue padded office chair in my upstairs pseudo-bedroom, typing them in the dark of the innumerable quiet nights that I spent surrounded by the warmth of family and familiar, safe places.

I'm glad I'm in Kenosha right now. I'm glad that my mate seems to be happy here. I know that life brings change and I do my best to embrace it and grow. But I missed my family so much in Detroit... It's good to be home with my mate. And it's good to be home, in Kenosha, with my family.
